Mark Gagnon’s paintings and installations explore modes of display, collapsing the boundary between fine art and commerce. Through his paintings, Gagnon has depicted public figures like American first ladies, members of the Bush Administration, and television personalities, as well as the Brooklyn Bridge, the Woolworth Building, and numerous public artworks and historic sites in lower Manhattan. For Jamaica Flux, Gagnon presents a series of portraits of the owners and sales team at Leonard’s Bootery, a shoe store on 164th Street off Jamaica Avenue founded in 1939. Gagnon worked with the store owners to integrate the paintings with the existing merchandise display.
