The Body that Housed Those Voices: Please Do Not Leave Your Child Unattended

Kiddie ride and sound, 55 x 34 x 36 inches

/

I create customized kiddie rides for various storefront locations in New York City. Sponsored by The Vending Company of Brooklyn, these rides are designed in collaboration with various sound artists. They project original music and thought-provoking messages in place of the usual children’s songs. The project for Jamaica Flux features Saul Williams’ Pledge of Resistance and segments from his music CD Not in My Name.

I believe that commercial places should not function solely for the exchange of goods and merchandise. They should also serve as “thinking places” that, in contrast with the overwhelming effects of street commerce, provoke the exchange of opinions in a more personal and intimate manner.

Special thanks to The Vending Company and its crews, Javier Agredo (J-star) for painting, and Saul Williams for recordings
